Student, 20, killed in hit-and-run while jogging

A promising 20-year-old university student has been tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident while she was out jogging last week.

A Life Cut Short

Elsa McGrain, a pre-med student at the University of Kansas, was on her regular evening run at approximately 6pm on Thursday when she was struck by a vehicle. The incident occurred near the Lawrence Regional Airport, located west of Kansas City.

Tragically, Elsa's body lay undiscovered for nearly ten hours. It was not until 3:35am on Friday morning that a passerby spotted her along the road in the 1700 block of E 1500 Road and alerted the police.

The Investigation and a Vehicle of Interest

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has since launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. Authorities have determined that the University of Kansas student died at the scene after being hit by a vehicle that failed to stop.

In a significant development, investigators have released images of a vehicle described as an all-white pickup truck with no side markings. While no formal charges have been filed in the case, a 36-year-old man was booked on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter the following Sunday.

A Community in Mourning

Elsa McGrain, who was originally from Omaha, Nebraska, was on track to graduate in 2026. She was an active and beloved member of her university community, particularly within the Chi Omega sorority where she served on the executive board as house manager.

Following the devastating news, Chi Omega shared a heartfelt tribute to Elsa on Instagram, describing her as a beacon of light and kindness. The statement read, "Elsa was the kind of person everyone wanted to be: genuine, kind, and full of light." It highlighted her compassionate nature, noting she had a gift for making everyone feel valued and that her faith was a guiding force in her life.

The sorority's post concluded, "Our hearts go out to Elsa’s friends, family, and all those who were touched by her light. Her faith, kindness, and sisterhood will forever remain in our hearts."
