Gym Teacher Detained on Serious Charges

A 22-year-old physical education teacher from Florida has been taken into custody following allegations of sending inappropriate photographs and text messages to a middle school student. Yezmar Angeanis Ramos-Figueroa was detained by detectives from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.

She now faces serious felony charges, including distributing obscene material to a minor and transmitting harmful material to a minor. The alleged incidents took place while she was employed as a PE teacher at Central Pointe Christian Academy, a private K-12 school.

Discovery and Investigation

The situation came to light in mid-October when the mother of the 13-year-old student contacted the police to report the suspected inappropriate contact. The Osceola Sheriff's Office launched an immediate investigation into the matter.

According to official statements, detectives managed to secure text messages and photographs that were allegedly sent from Ramos-Figueroa's phone to the student's phone. During questioning, the former teacher admitted to texting and sending a picture to the victim.

Ramos-Figueroa was working at the academy's middle school campus in Kissimmee, which is situated approximately 20 miles south of Central Orlando.

Legal Consequences and Broader Context

Following her arrest, Ramos-Figueroa was taken to the Osceola County Jail. Her bond has been set at $5,000 for each charge, totalling $10,000. Both charges are third-degree felonies, and a conviction on each count could result in a maximum prison sentence of five years.

This case is, unfortunately, not an isolated incident. It highlights a recurring pattern of safeguarding failures within educational settings. Earlier this month, a 31-year-old former Missouri teacher was sentenced to a decade in prison for sexually abusing a student. In a separate case last month, a Nebraska educator and her boyfriend were arrested for allegedly grooming and sex trafficking a student.

These events underscore the critical importance of robust safeguarding protocols and vigilance to protect young people from those in positions of trust.
