Devon Teenagers Create Mental Health Resources for Schools Across England

Four teenagers from Devon, aged 14 to 16, have developed mental health resources that are now being used in schools across England. The group, called Spark UK, created lesson plans, newsletters, and videos after finding existing materials inadequate for addressing their concerns in a relatable voice.

The teenagers cover topics such as the impact of lockdowns, sleep importance, and suicidal thoughts. They seek advice from adult experts but produce all content themselves. Founder Conor Warren, 15, emphasised that the resources are made by teenagers for teenagers, with no adult board dictating their work.

Spark UK has attracted national attention, with celebrities like Jonny Wilkinson, Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, and Steve Backshall recording messages for an online advent calendar about their own mental health. The group's materials are free and used in schools from Devon to Bristol, London, and Lincolnshire.

Bridie Downing, 16, head of content, said adults often dismiss mental health issues as hormones or avoid discussing suicide, fearing it might give young people ideas. She believes parents and teachers need to engage more openly with these problems. The group plans to create a full curriculum and ensure younger voices keep the content relevant as they age.
