Restaurant Manager's CCTV Shows Thief's Friend Impaled on Fence After Phone Theft
Thief's Friend Impaled on Fence After Phone Theft in Melbourne

A restaurant manager in Melbourne has recounted the astonishing sequence of events where a man impaled himself on a fence just moments after her daughter's phone was stolen from their establishment. Cynthia Costa, manager of Piccolo Mondo in Carlton, inner-north Melbourne, shared the unbelievable incident, which was captured on CCTV and later posted on TikTok.

The Theft and the Fence Incident

Cynthia Costa explained that the incident began when her husband, Dave, locked the gate in the restaurant's courtyard. CCTV footage shows two young men inside Piccolo Mondo, with Ms Costa alleging that the man dressed in black stole a phone from the counter. Moments later, both men entered the courtyard and asked Dave to unlock the gate, but he did not have a key available.

"The guy who stole the phone jumped the fence and walked off," Ms Costa stated. "His friend in the yellow tried to jump the fence, got stuck, cut his main artery, and ends up passing out in front of the restaurant." The man can be heard screaming in pain while clinging to the gate in the footage, highlighting the severity of the impalement.

The Search for the Phone

Ms Costa said her daughter arrived home around 1 a.m. and immediately sought help to locate her missing phone. Using her laptop, the daughter tracked the phone's last ping to a location a few streets away from the restaurant. The family then went to that area, searching on a patch of grass in an attempt to recover the device.

While searching, a group of men standing on a corner approached and asked if they were okay. Ms Costa informed them that her daughter's phone had been stolen from the restaurant and was last pinged nearby. It was at this moment she realised the men were the culprits involved in the theft.

The Confrontation and Recovery

"I looked up and said, 'Hang on, have you seen a phone?' and they said, 'We haven't seen nothing'," Ms Costa recalled. She then confronted the thief directly, saying, "Yes you have, you're the guy who stole my daughter's phone. Can I have my daughter's phone back? That was a low blow."

In a bold move, the thief had the audacity to demand $50 in exchange for returning the phone. Ms Costa firmly refused, stating, "No, you're going to get the phone because I'm not paying you for my phone." She claimed the thief then begged her not to contact the police, to which she responded that she had already posted his face on TikTok and informed the authorities.

Ultimately, the thief returned the phone, bringing a tense end to the bizarre exchange. The incident has sparked reactions online, with many describing it as instant karma for the theft.

Public Reaction and Aftermath

Aussies quickly shared their thoughts on social media, with one commenting, "That's so wild but glad she has her phone back. What a wild story." Another added, "Yeah that's called protection instant karma," while a third said, "What pieces of s***, who does that? Absolute lowlifes. I hope Miss is okay and the phone is returned. Photos are irreplaceable."
