Thug jailed for nine-hour attack on partner in Newcastle

A man who threatened to smash his partner's ribs and face during a nine-hour assault has been jailed. Cory Lavery, 31, subjected the woman to a prolonged attack at a property in Newcastle on December 3, 2025.

Attack Details

Newcastle Crown Court heard that Lavery began arguing with the woman after drinking alcohol. He told her, 'I'm going to smash your ribs in and your face,' before grabbing her by the throat. When she broke free, he pushed her into a cooker and kitchen benches. The assault continued for nine hours, with Lavery repeatedly punching her to the face and body and grabbing her throat.

Prosecutor Lucy Todd said the victim managed to run out asking for help but did not leave the property. She eventually attended the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment. Lavery was arrested the following day and made no comment in custody.

Previous Conviction

The court heard that Lavery had previously been jailed for 18 months in August 2025 for assaulting the same woman. The victim did not support the prosecution and did not provide a victim impact statement.

Defence Mitigation

Defence barrister Ms Turner said Lavery received mental health treatment in 2022 after his father's death and had concerns about his engagement with services. She noted that Lavery and the victim supported each other in drug and alcohol abuse, and that the victim remained in contact with Lavery's mother, leading to their reconciliation. Lavery was employed in prison kitchens, a trusted role.

Sentencing

Recorder Mark Giuliani said: 'Women in this position need protection from thugs and bullies like you.' He noted Lavery's difficult upbringing but stated it was no excuse for the prolonged assault. He sentenced Lavery to 25 months in prison, saying a suspended sentence would fail in his public duty. A restraining order was also issued against the male witness who observed the attack but did not intervene due to fear of being assaulted.
