Kieran Rooney, 31, of Stuart Walk, Shotton Colliery, County Durham, has been sentenced to six months in prison for throwing a screwdriver at his girlfriend during a Valentine's Day argument. The incident occurred on February 14, 2026, in Peterlee, resulting in a wound to the woman's thigh.
Court Proceedings
Appearing at Durham Crown Court via video link from HMP Holme House on Thursday, Rooney pleaded guilty to section 20 assault. The court heard that Rooney threw the screwdriver during a domestic argument, striking his then-partner in the leg. Judge Nathan Adams stated that while Rooney did not intend to hit her, he was reckless in his actions.
Details of the Assault
Prosecutor Shaun Dryden confirmed the screwdriver caused a wound to the woman's thigh. Judge Adams described the assault as "impulsive and shortlived" and noted the injury was "minor." Rooney had been on remand for four months prior to sentencing.
Previous Convictions
The court learned Rooney had five previous convictions for six offences, including a breach of a non-molestation order against a former partner 12 years ago. Defence barrister Martin Scarborough argued that Rooney does not exhibit a pattern of domestic abuse, highlighting his good work ethic and long gaps between offences.
Sentence and Release
Judge Adams sentenced Rooney to six months in prison. However, given the four months already served on remand, Rooney was ordered to be released immediately. The sentence reflects the recklessness of the act and the need for deterrence.
