Scarborough Hazmat After Irritant Attack on Rough Sleepers

Two people sleeping rough in Scarborough were allegedly targeted with an irritant in the early hours of Wednesday, triggering a major emergency response involving police, ambulance crews, and firefighters. A hazmat team was also deployed to the scene on Ramshill Road shortly after 2:30 am, leading to the closure of Ramshill Road and Northway.

Victims Hospitalized with Facial Injuries

North Yorkshire Police confirmed that a man and a woman who were sleeping rough had what is believed to be an irritant thrown at them. Both were taken to hospital for treatment of facial injuries, which are not thought to be serious. The force thanked members of the public who assisted at the scene.

Arrest Made and Investigation Ongoing

A woman has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody as enquiries continue. Police stated that an “extensive investigation” is underway to identify any other suspects who may have been involved.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Police in Scarborough are investigating after a man and a woman who were sleeping rough in the Ramshill Road area, had what is believed to be an irritant thrown at them. It happened at around 2.30am in the early hours of Wednesday 15 July. The victims were taken to hospital for treatment to facial injuries that are not believed to be serious.”

Appeal for Witnesses

The spokesperson added: “One woman has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody at this time. An extensive investigation is ongoing to trace any other suspects believed to be involved. All three emergency services were involved in the incident which led to two areas of the town, Ramshill Road and Northway, being cordoned off and road closures put in place.”
