The North East England Chamber of Commerce has issued a warning to its members regarding fraudulent emails that appear to originate from the organisation. According to the Chamber, these messages are "intended to cause reputational damage" and have been received by "a small number of individuals."
Chamber Confirms No Data Breach
In a statement sent to businesses, the Chamber emphasised that its systems have not been compromised and no data breach has occurred. The organisation is taking the matter seriously and is collaborating with relevant authorities to address the issue.
CEO John McCabe communicated directly with members, stating: "We are writing to make you aware that a small number of individuals have received vexatious emails purporting to come from the Chamber. Our robust systems have not been compromised, no data breach has occurred and we've seen no evidence that member data has fallen into the wrong hands. The information used in these emails is publicly available."
Emails Target Reputation
McCabe added: "The emails appear to be intended to cause reputational damage to the Chamber. We are taking this matter seriously and are working with the relevant authorities and advisers as appropriate. Some emails may use the names or contact details of Chamber colleagues, or reference individuals connected to the Chamber."
The Chamber has urged members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious communications to Data@necc.co.uk with the subject line REF: DP0726.
