Prince William, the Prince of Wales and a known avid England football supporter, has been notably absent from all World Cup matches so far, despite his role as president of the Football Association. As England edges closer to a semi-final clash with Argentina, fans and royal watchers are speculating whether the future king will appear at future games.
Royal Absence Amidst European Counterparts
Other European royals have been spotted at matches, including King Felipe of Spain, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands. However, Britain's future King has been nowhere to be seen, leading to questions about his absence.
Possible Reasons for William's No-Show
Several plausible reasons have emerged. William told Travis Kelce's podcast that he would travel to watch England if they reached the final. However, his schedule has been packed. His wife, Catherine, is a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, requiring her attendance at Wimbledon, which she did with William and their two eldest children on a busy day. Additionally, Prince George just finished his final term at Lambrook school, a milestone William wanted to celebrate at home.
Logistical reasons aside, some royal commentators suggest a political motive. Simon Vigar, a royal commentator and author of The Four Wives of Windsor, told HELLO!'s Right Royal Podcast: "There would likely be some expectation for [William and Donald Trump] to meet. The President will be asking, 'Where's your wife?' Because we know he's very taken, he's a big fan of Catherine. So yes, he would have had to get involved in the diplomatic stuff. It's complicated."
Diplomatic Implications of a US Visit
Royal author Richard Fitzwilliams told Celebrity Intelligence: "If Prince William did visit the US, it would almost certainly involve meeting President Trump. Royalty has to be used sparingly. Handling this with care gives it a special cachet."
While no official confirmation has been made, fans remain hopeful that William will appear if England reaches the final.
