Police in Chhattisgarh, India, have arrested four men accused of dragging a woman into a field and gang-raping her while her husband lay unconscious from drinking a traditional rice beer. The attack occurred on June 27 in the Surajpur district, according to the Times of India.
Victim Attacked on Way Home from Market
The woman was returning from a local market when her husband, who had consumed kosna—a fermented rice beer common in central and northeastern Indian states—passed out on the roadside. Four men allegedly approached her, dragged her to a nearby field, and raped her. After the assault, the men threatened her to discourage reporting.
Police Investigation and Arrests
The victim fled and reported the gang rape to police two days later, on June 29. Local officers launched an investigation and arrested four suspects, who remain in custody and will appear in court at a later date. Police continue to investigate the incident.
