Newcastle Derelict Building Fire Treated as Suspected Arson

A fire at a derelict building near Jesmond Dene in Newcastle is being treated as suspected arson, police have confirmed. Firefighters were dispatched to Jesmond Dene Road at 7:45 am on Saturday, June 13, and were joined by other emergency services.

Smoke was seen rising from a building that appeared to be within the grounds of the Jesmond Dene House hotel. The fire was extinguished several hours later, and police confirmed that no injuries were reported.

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service deployed six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform to the scene. The last fire engine left around 12:12 pm, with fire officers later returning for safety inspections.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a fire in the grounds of Jesmond Dene House shortly before 8 am on 13 June. We initially dispatched a double crewed ambulance, a duty officer, and two vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). Some of our resources have since been stood down, and one HART vehicle and a duty officer remain at the scene should the fire service need our support."

Today, a Northumbria Police spokesperson added: "At 7:45 am on Saturday (June 13) we received a report from the fire service of a fire at a derelict building on Jesmond Dene Road in Newcastle. Emergency services attended, the fire was extinguished a number of hours later, and no-one is reported to have been injured. Enquiries into the report are ongoing, and the cause of the fire is being treated as suspected arson.
