A shocking incident occurred during the LVM Saarland Trofeo junior cycling race in Germany on Sunday when an elderly woman on a mobility scooter caused a massive high-speed crash. The race, part of the UCI Junior Nations Cup for 17- and 18-year-olds, was taking place in the Saarland region near the borders of France and Luxembourg.
Chaos on the Road
As riders sped past, the woman inexplicably edged her mobility scooter onto the road. A Danish cyclist narrowly avoided her, but Dutch rider Paul Vriesman collided with the scooter at full speed, somersaulting through the air and landing hard on the tarmac. The crash triggered a pile-up involving several other cyclists, leaving them sprawled on the road in shock.
Viral Footage and Rider's Reaction
Footage of the incident spread rapidly on social media. Vriesman, who rides for Decathlon CMA CGM Juniors, shared the clip on Instagram and wrote: "A very nasty looking crash but it looks like I got away with it relatively well without major injuries. Didn't get to finish the race while every stage was feeling like a big step forward. Lost for words on how something like this can happen. So much hard work and yet another setback."
Remarkably, all riders avoided serious injuries. The spectator was also believed to be unharmed, though her scooter likely sustained major damage.
Race Results
The final stage was won by Australia's Alistair Forsyth of Merida Adelaar Cycling Team. The overall general classification was topped by Norway's Sindre Orholm-Lonseth, also of Decathlon CMA CGM. Dutch teenager Splinter van 't Hoff finished second overall, writing on Instagram: "Trofeo Saarland nations cup. Gc p2+ team classification. P2 stage 2 & p3 stage 3.2. Thanks to whole team."
