M25 Lorry Fires Cause Travel Chaos

The crash comes after two separate lorry fires closed part of the M25 for the majority of the day. Disruption on the anticlockwise stretch of the motorway has been ongoing since around 3am on Tuesday morning, when emergency services were called to an incident between junction 27 for the M11 and junction 26 near Waltham Abbey in Essex.

Two lorries then collided in queuing traffic between junction 28 for Brentwood and junction 27 for Epping, causing one of them to catch fire. Pictures from the scene showed the vehicle engulfed in flames as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

One of the four lanes has since reopened, but the stretch will be fully closed again from 10pm for recovery work. The fire resulted in serious damage to the motorway lanes, with an engineer's assessment indicating all four lanes need to be resurfaced.

Drivers planning to travel anti-clockwise between junctions 28 and 26 have been advised to follow diversion routes to avoid the long-term and ongoing roadworks at Gallows Corner.
