Police have issued an update following a distressing incident at a Cambridgeshire zoo where a three-year-old boy ended up in a crocodile enclosure. The boy remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.
Man Bailed in Connection with Incident
A 30-year-old man from Norfolk, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, has been released on bail. He is not known to the victim and was deemed unfit for interview. He has been bailed until September 18.
Investigation Ongoing
Detectives from the Major Crime Unit at Cambridgeshire Constabulary continue to investigate. Officers were alerted to Johnson's of Old Hurst zoo at 1.24pm by the ambulance service after reports that the three-year-old had sustained serious injuries. He was rescued by zoo staff, received medical attention at the scene, and was rushed to hospital.
Det Insp Verity McCann said: "Our enquiries are ongoing as we continue to understand the circumstances surrounding this distressing incident. Our thoughts remain with the boy, and his family and specialist officers continue to support them through this difficult time."
Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses claimed that zoo owner Tracey Johnson jumped into the enclosure in an effort to save the child. One local told The Sun: "Apparently, the wife of the zoo owner, Tracey Johnson, jumped in to the enclosure to save the child."
The zoo confirmed that its Tropical House would remain closed "out of respect" for the boy's family. In a statement, the zoo said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family following the incident that occurred today."
