Former EastEnders star Joshua Pascoe has spoken out after his co-star Jamie Borthwick was sacked from the BBC soap, stating that it proves 'no one is bigger than the show'.
Jamie Borthwick's Departure
Jamie Borthwick, 31, who played Jay Brown for 19 years after joining Albert Square in 2006, will not return to the long-running drama. Last year, he was suspended after using a slur against disabled people on the set of Strictly Come Dancing.
A BBC Studios spokesperson confirmed: 'We can confirm that Jamie Borthwick will not be returning to EastEnders. We do not comment on individual matters.'
Joshua Pascoe's Reaction
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, former Ben Mitchell star Joshua Pascoe commented on Jamie's shock exit. He said: 'Yeah, I saw that. I don’t know what the comment was, but yeah, he’s been booted off. It proves that no one is bigger than the show. You’ve got to keep your nose clean.'
Joshua, who played Ben Mitchell between 2010 and 2012, reflected on how his outlook has changed since joining the soap as a teenager. 'When you’re in that industry at 15, you don’t think like that. As a 31-year-old now, if I was dropped into EastEnders, I’d be a completely different person to what I was back then.'
Strict Rules on Set
He added that the soap operates strict rules to protect both the production and its cast. 'There was quite a bit of control there. One is probably to look after the actor, but two, it’s so that you don’t bring EastEnders into any disrepute. Whether you think it’s fair or not, it is what it is at the end of the day and you’ve just got to roll with it.'
Joshua also recalled cast departures during his time on the show. 'There were a few people, even when I was there, that got booted off, and you think, ‘Really? Come on.’ But at the end of the day, they’ve got to look after the show.'
