Tottenham Star Lucas Bergvall Hands in Transfer Request After Chelsea Approach
Lucas Bergvall Hands in Transfer Request at Tottenham

Sweden World Cup star Lucas Bergvall has informed Tottenham Hotspur of his desire to leave the Premier League club this summer, according to reports. The 20-year-old midfielder, who joined Spurs from Swedish outfit Djurgardens in 2024 after beating off competition from Barcelona and other European clubs, has seen his game-time reduce under new manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Reduced Role Under De Zerbi

Bergvall made 45 appearances across his first season in north London but was often left on the bench after De Zerbi took over towards the end of last term. The Italian coach favoured a midfield trio of Rodrigo Bentancur, Joao Palhinha and Conor Gallagher, limiting Bergvall's opportunities.

According to The Athletic, Tottenham have been made aware of Bergvall's desire to be sold after he attracted interest from Chelsea and Aston Villa during the January transfer window. Spurs rebuffed those approaches earlier in the year but would now be more receptive to talks given the player's stance.

Increased Competition Looming

Bergvall could face even more competition at Spurs next season, as De Zerbi has sanctioned moves for Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali and West Ham's Mateus Fernandes. Tottenham's interest in Tonali is advanced, with an opening offer worth £75m rejected by Newcastle, who are holding out for at least £85m.

It is not clear whether Chelsea or Aston Villa could revive their interest, but suitors both domestically and abroad are 'alert' to the situation. Chelsea are expected to bring in several new signings this summer as Xabi Alonso prepares to take over at Stamford Bridge.

World Cup Focus

Bergvall's focus is currently on Sweden's World Cup campaign, having featured from the bench in their opening two group games – a 5-1 win over Tunisia and a 5-1 defeat to Netherlands. He became Sweden's youngest World Cup player when he came on in the match against Tunisia. Sweden, managed by ex-Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter, face highly-rated Japan in their final Group F game on Friday.
