The family of Stephen Ogilvie, the man who lost his left eye in an alleged knife attack in Belfast on Monday, has issued a statement condemning the disturbances that erupted on the city's streets the following night.
Family calls for calm
In a statement released through Independent Councillor Stafford Ward, the family expressed their devastation over the attack and made clear that the overnight unrest is not welcome. They praised the bravery of local residents who intervened to help the victim and urged both the public and media to respect their privacy as they focus on his recovery.
Attack details
Hadi Alodid, 30, has been remanded in custody for four weeks after being charged with the attempted murder of Stephen Ogilvie, threats to kill an NHS radiographer, and possession of a knife. The attack occurred on Kinnaird Avenue.
"We are completely devastated by the horrific attack on our loved one. This has been a massive shock to our whole family, and right now, our only priority is being at his bedside and helping him recover," the statement read.
Gratitude and plea for peace
The family extended profound thanks to the local people who bravely intervened during the attack, saying their quick actions saved his life. They also thanked emergency services and hospital staff. The family acknowledged tensions and protests following the incident but emphasized that peaceful protest is the only way forward. They highlighted the valuable contributions of migrants to the country, including in healthcare and hospitality, and urged that the tragedy not be used to divide people or fuel hostility.
"We are asking the media and the public to please give us some space. We need privacy to focus on our family right now, without cameras or people speculating about what happened," the statement concluded, urging anyone with information to contact the police.
