Couple Attacked by Bear Saving Dogs in California

A 17-month-old American black bear has been euthanized after attacking a married couple and their dogs in Mammoth Lakes, California, near Yosemite National Park. The incident occurred when the wife heard one of her dogs fighting with the bear in the garden and rushed out to intervene.

Attack Details

As she tried to pull her pet away, another dog ran into the garden, prompting the bear to turn on her and slash her with its claws. The husband came to her rescue, but the bear then targeted him. The wife used a water bottle to drive the bear off her husband, who then ran inside to get a weapon. He returned with a small axe and struck the bear with the blunt end, scaring it away.

Injuries and Aftermath

The couple sustained serious bites and claw marks and were taken to Mammoth Hospital, but are expected to recover fully. Their dogs suffered minor injuries. California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) officers located the bear and euthanized it, deeming it a threat to public safety.

Official Response

Mammoth Lakes Police Chief Dan Casabian stated, 'Incidents like this are extremely rare in Mammoth Lakes. Bears almost always avoid humans and will flee when confronted. This type of aggressive behaviour is highly unusual.' He expressed gratitude for the quick response of officers and medical staff.

Residents are reminded to keep a safe distance from bears, not leave out pet food, and secure household rubbish to reduce bear encounters.
