Bellingham slaps Barco in World Cup altercation

New footage has emerged showing Jude Bellingham slapping Argentina's Valentin Barco after England's World Cup semi-final defeat, igniting a fiery confrontation. The incident occurred as Argentina celebrated their 2-1 victory in Atlanta, with Bellingham taking issue with Barco's earlier actions.

Confrontation Details

Barco, an unused substitute, had previously charged towards England's players after Enzo Fernandez's equaliser, rather than celebrating with his own teammates. Referee Ismail Elfath intervened to remove Barco from England's vicinity, but no sanction was imposed. The new footage shows Bellingham observing Argentina's celebrations before Barco joined a cluster of players. Bellingham, who had exchanged handshakes with another player, strode across and caught Barco in the face, leading to shoves and heated words. A minor scuffle broke out, with Morgan Rogers and Bellingham needing restraint, while England reserve goalkeeper Dean Henderson acted as a barrier.

Match Context

Goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez overturned Anthony Gordon's opener for England, as Lionel Scaloni's Argentina reached a successive World Cup final. England manager Thomas Tuchel defended his second-half tactical switch to add defenders, stating: "You can discuss this with a million coaches (but) I have to make a decision on the pitch. I analysed the match and I did it a certain way so that's my responsibility. In the moment, no regrets. The team gave everything and we were very, very close. We deserved to be up 1-0."

Tuchel's Defence

Tuchel praised his team's character: "We played one of our better matches, maybe our best match in the circumstances. The team was top, we couldn't get over the line but no regrets. I think we saw the mentality throughout the match and the strong group. We played the matches how they were, we played against strong teams in the group, travelled a lot of miles, played at altitude, we played with 10 men, we played in the heat and we overcame every obstacle. We were very close today. It's not the moment to analyse the full tournament, we just went out because we lost a crucial match."
