Liverpool Sets Date to Permanently Install Pop-Up Cycle Lanes
Liverpool to Permanently Install Pop-Up Cycle Lanes

Liverpool Council has signed off on £15m worth of plans to permanently adopt pop-up cycle lanes and improve junctions along a mile-long stretch between Vauxhall Road and Commercial Road. Work could start from October this year, with a completion date of 2028 pencilled in.

Details of the Vauxhall Road Scheme

The plans include a fully segregated cycle lane, upgraded footpaths and new pedestrian crossings at busy junctions, including Leeds Street, Burlington Street, Boundary Street and Sandhills Lane. The scheme aims to improve safety by reducing the number of collisions along the route.

Cllr Dan Barrington, cabinet member for transport and connectivity, said the initial proposals received more than 80% approval during a consultation period in September 2024. The city council will now appoint a contractor to undertake the project in the north end of the city.

Sefton Park Active Travel Scheme

An additional active travel scheme could also be adopted around Sefton Park, running approximately 800m from Princes Avenue Junction, through Princes Park and connecting to Sefton Park. A fully segregated cycle route will be introduced through Princes Park, along with footway upgrades, improved pedestrian crossings and junction upgrades at Princes Avenue/Croxteth Road/Kingsley Road roundabout, Ullet Road/Windermere Terrace/Sefton Park Road/Aigburth Drive, and Aigburth Drive/Croxteth Drive.

A design and build contract will be entered into for the Sefton Park project, with a view to breaking ground in late 2027.

Part of Wider Active Travel Network

The project forms part of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, which is developing a network of high-quality active travel routes across the region. Cllr Barrington said: “Both of these schemes were pop up schemes during the pandemic in 2022 so we got funding from Active Travel England to make these into permanent schemes.”

He added: “Both are really major schemes in our active travel offer making sure we can make it easier for people to choose to walk, wheel or cycle for journeys across the city.”
