The family of Stephen Ogilvie, the man left critically injured in Monday evening's knife attack in Belfast, has spoken out against the violent disorder that erupted across the city on Tuesday night. In a statement released via Independent Councillor Stafford Ward, relatives said they 'want to make it clear that overnight unrest is not welcome.'
Family Plea for Peace
The Ogilvie family expressed devastation over the attack on Kinnaird Avenue, describing it as a 'massive shock.' They emphasized that their sole focus is on supporting Stephen's recovery at his bedside. 'We are completely devastated by the horrific attack on our loved one,' the statement read. 'This has been a massive shock to our whole family, and right now, our only priority is being at his bedside and helping him recover.'
They paid tribute to bystanders who intervened during the stabbing, saying, 'Your quick actions absolutely saved his life, and we will never forget what you did for him in that moment.' Gratitude was also extended to emergency services and medical staff caring for Mr. Ogilvie, who lost his left eye in the attack.
Call for Peaceful Protest
Acknowledging tensions following the incident, the family urged calm: 'We are aware of the tensions and talk of protests following this incident. We want to make it absolutely clear that overnight unrest is not welcome, and peaceful protest is the only way forward.' They highlighted the valuable contributions of migrants to the UK, including in healthcare and hospitality, and warned against using the tragedy to divide people or fuel hostility.
The family also requested privacy, asking the media and public to refrain from speculation and to allow them space to cope. They urged anyone with information about the attack to contact police.
Court Proceedings
Hadi Alodid, 30, appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court charged with the attempted murder of Stephen Ogilvie, threats to kill an NHS radiographer, and possession of a knife. He was remanded in custody for four weeks, according to Belfast Live. The attack has sparked significant public concern and protests, leading to the disorder condemned by the family.
