A devastating tragedy unfolded at a North Carolina waterfall this week, as a seven-year-old boy lost his life while heroically attempting to save his friend from drowning. The heartbroken family of Abel Friday-Williams has revealed that the young boy perished in a pond near Bruce Meisner Park on Wednesday evening.
Emergency Response and Investigation
First responders were dispatched to the scene of a possible drowning just before 7pm, according to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office. Upon arrival, emergency personnel recovered the submerged child from a body of water connected to the park. The boy was swiftly transported to Frye Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.
The sheriff's office is actively investigating allegations that Abel may have been unsupervised at the time of the incident and that he entered the water to assist a friend. The city of Hickory, where the waterfall is located, has clarified that the drowning did not occur on park property. Instead, the area is part of the city's northwest wastewater treatment pump station, with surrounding paths not intended for public use.
A Family's Heartbreak and Warning
Brianna Sledge, Abel's aunt, expressed profound grief, stating, 'It breaks my heart because he saved his friend and lost his. He went in behind his friends to save his life and lost his.' The family confirmed that Abel had visited the park with a friend and an adult, and they believe he may have ventured into the water to help the other child.
Lashun Ramseur, Abel's cousin, issued a stern warning about the dangers of the area, saying, 'There needs to be awareness that this is very dangerous. Just looking at the situation, it's very, very, very dangerous.'
Remembering a Bright Light
Abel Friday-Williams was a first-grade student at Southwest Primary Elementary, described in his obituary as a 'bright light to all who knew him.' The tribute highlighted his exceptional kindness and good manners, which made him stand out even at such a young age.
His passions and character included:
- A deep love for sports, particularly enjoying football with the Mountain View Tigers
- Bringing joy, laughter, and spirited energy both on the field and at home
- Leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew and loved him
Tributes from His Teacher
Patricia Icard Baker, one of Abel's teachers, shared heartfelt memories on Facebook, recalling his infectious smile that lit up the classroom every morning. She wrote, 'He truly did bring joy with him. That little rascal had my heart right from the start.'
Baker extended her thoughts and prayers to Abel's mother, little sister, and the rest of his family, as well as to his classmates who are already feeling the void he left behind. She added, 'He was the sweetest, smartest and kindest boy. One of the things I have held onto…his smile is making heaven a bit more brighter this morning.'
The Catawba County Sheriff's Office has been contacted for further comment as the investigation into this heartbreaking incident continues.
