A devastating early morning collision in Bolton has claimed four lives and left five others hospitalised with serious injuries, prompting a major emergency response.
What Happened on Wigan Road?
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 12.45am on Sunday, 11 January 2026, on Wigan Road in the Deane area of Bolton. It involved a high-impact crash between a red Seat Leon and a Citroen C4 Picasso. The force of the collision caused severe damage to both vehicles, requiring emergency services to cut people from the wreckage.
Victims and Emergency Response
Greater Manchester Police confirmed the tragic death toll. The four fatalities include the driver and two passengers from the red Seat Leon, and the driver of the Citroen C4 Picasso.
Five other passengers sustained various injuries in the major trauma event and were rushed to hospital for urgent treatment. Their current medical conditions remain unknown at this time.
Ongoing Investigation and Travel Disruption
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) has taken charge of the inquiry. Officers are urgently appealing to the public for information. They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the crash, saw either vehicle—especially the red Seat Leon—prior to the incident, or who may have relevant dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage from the area around 12.45am.
A large police cordon remained in place throughout Sunday, with Wigan Road closed in both directions between Deane Church Lane and Bankfield Street. This key route's closure is causing significant traffic disruption across the Deane and Daubhill areas. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the vicinity entirely while investigations continue.
