Police in Bangladesh have arrested one man after a 36-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped following a kidnapping by a taxi driver. The attack occurred on July 14 in the city of Sylhet, according to authorities. Three other suspects remain at large, and police are conducting raids across the area to locate them.
Victim Kidnapped After Calling a Taxi
The woman reportedly called an autorickshaw, a type of taxi, at around 8pm from the Chandipur area of South Surma. The driver allegedly ignored her intended destination and instead took her to a house, where she was raped by four men. She managed to report the attack to police at around 11:30pm, prompting officers to rush to the scene and rescue her.
One Suspect Arrested, Three Still Wanted
Goyach Mia, 44, was arrested during a police raid. The three other suspects have been identified as Ashik Mia, 30, Saidur Rahman, 30, and Amir Ali, 28. Gazi Mahbubur Rahman, the officer in charge of the case, said officers are conducting raids across the area to track them down.
Victim Receiving Medical Treatment
After being rescued, the woman was taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment. Her current condition is unknown. The alleged gang rape took place in Sylhet, the fifth-largest city in Bangladesh with a population of over one million. According to local media, the victim was taken from Sylhet's Bishwanath upazila, located around 20 miles southwest of the city.
Police are urging the public to provide any relevant information to help with the investigation.
