Diary Reveals Rapes Before Euthanasia; Mother Seeks Justice

Noelia Castillo Ramos died by euthanasia on March 26 at an assisted living facility in Barcelona, aged 25. She had lost the use of her legs after a suicide attempt in 2022, which followed two separate rapes. Her mother, Yolanda Ramos, has now filed two complaints with prosecutors in Barcelona and Tarragona to initiate formal investigations into the alleged sexual assaults, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Diary Reveals New Evidence

Yolanda discovered new evidence of the assaults in Noelia's diary, which Noelia gave her on the day she died. The diary detailed that Noelia was raped by her ex-boyfriend and also drugged, plied with alcohol, and raped by three men in Salou, a popular beach destination. “Noelia spoke about the rapes on television, and on the very day she died, she gave me her diary. When I read it, I understood many things,” Yolanda said in announcing the complaints.

Suicide Attempt and Paraplegia

After the rapes, Noelia attempted suicide, resulting in paraplegia. She was later described as 'severely depressed,' leading to her request for euthanasia. In a Spanish TV interview, Noelia explained her decision: “I want to go now and stop suffering, period. None of my family is in favour of euthanasia. But what about all the pain I've suffered during all these years?”

Legal and Ethical Battles

Noelia's death has sparked controversy in Spain. Her family fiercely opposed her wish to die, with her father launching legal challenges assisted by the conservative Spanish Foundation of Christian Lawyers. Appeals against an independent panel of doctors, lawyers, and ethics experts, which approved Noelia's request in 2024, failed in Spanish courts, including the Supreme Court. A final appeal to the European Court of Human Rights was also rejected.

Euthanasia Law and Precedent

Euthanasia became legal in Catalonia five years ago under strict conditions. While hundreds of applications have been approved, Noelia's case is the first to reach court. The Christian Lawyers have launched a petition to repeal the euthanasia laws, calling them an 'absolute failure.'
