Pipe Bomb Device Found on Car in Derry

The Police Service of Northern Ireland is investigating after a viable pipe bomb-style device was discovered attached to a car windscreen in Derry.

Discovery in Waterside

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, June 16, 2026, residents in the Nelson Drive area of Waterside, Derry, reported hearing a loud bang. Police responded and found a pipe bomb-type device fixed to a vehicle's windscreen. The car window was broken.

A cordon was established, and the device was removed for further examination. The PSNI confirmed the device was viable and has been taken away for analysis.

Police Statement

A PSNI spokesperson said: It was reported that a loud bang was heard in the housing area around 12.30am. It was discovered that a car window was broken and a pipe bomb-type device was found on the windscreen. Our officers and Ammunition Technical Officers attended and cordons, which were in place for a number of hours overnight as we conducted enquiries, have been lifted. The object has now been declared as a viable device and has been taken away for further examination.
