A community in Norwich has been left in shock and mourning after a mother-of-four was fatally stabbed outside her home last Saturday night.
Neighbours' desperate attempts to save a life
The victim has been named by neighbours as Tania Williams, a woman in her 40s with distinctive bright blue hair. The attack occurred just before 11.45pm on Saturday 17 January in the cul-de-sac of Catherine Gardens, Thorpe St Andrew.
Residents heard screams and rushed out to discover the horrific scene. One neighbour described the frantic moments, stating they called 999 and were instructed to perform CPR. 'My neighbour said she was far gone by then,' they recounted. 'We knew it was Tania because of her bright blue hair. It's a shock to my system.'
Despite their efforts, Ms Williams, who had suffered slash wounds to her neck, was declared dead at the scene. She had lived on the street for the past decade.
A 'bubbly' and active member of the community
Friends and neighbours have paid tribute to Ms Williams, remembering her as a vibrant and caring person. One neighbour, Mrs Drake, said: 'She was so lovely. I can't believe it's happened. It doesn't feel real. She was a bubbly person.'
Floral tributes have been laid outside her home. Ms Williams was known for her community spirit, having campaigned publicly last February for more dog waste bins in the local area to keep the streets clean for children walking to school.
Police investigation and arrest
Norfolk Police have launched a murder investigation. In the early hours of Sunday 18 January, officers arrested a man in his 60s on suspicion of murder on Dereham Road, Norwich. Police believe the man was known to Ms Williams.
The suspect remains in custody at Wymondham Police Investigation Centre, with detectives granted an additional 30 hours to question him. Detective Superintendent Stacey Murray stated: 'We do believe this to be an incident in which both parties were known to each other.'
Detective Inspector Sam Pontin emphasised the human tragedy, adding: 'We must remember that at the heart of this investigation is a family who have suffered the devastating loss of a loved one.' Family Liaison Officers are supporting the family.
Police cordons remain in place at locations in Catherine Gardens and Yarmouth Road as enquiries continue. Officers are urging anyone with information to contact them quoting incident reference 559 of January 17.
