US lawmakers are expressing alarm over 12 scientists who have died or disappeared since 2022, all of whom had ties to nuclear, space, or classified programmes. The House Oversight Committee is investigating 10 of these cases, warning the FBI, Pentagon, and Department of Energy that “these deaths and disappearances may represent a grave threat to U.S. national security and to U.S. personnel with access to scientific secrets.”
Details of the Incidents
The incidents include scientists from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory. Some disappearances, such as those of Monica Reza and retired Air Force General William McCasland, may be linked. While some cases have been ruled out as foul play or have identified suspects, the lack of clear information has led to widespread conspiracy theories, which officials and families often dismiss.
President Donald Trump commented that “hopefully” it is all just a “coincidence.”
In total, 12 US scientists have gone missing or died, and the mystery has become the talk—and worry—of Washington.
