Tribute To Teen Who Died After Merseyside Beach Swim

A 15-year-old boy has died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the sea off Merseyside, despite the efforts of emergency services and members of the public. The incident occurred on a beach near Formby on Tuesday afternoon, during the UK's recent heatwave.

The teenager, who has not been named, was pulled from the water by lifeguards and taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police have said his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

The tragedy is one of several drownings that have taken place across the UK during the May heatwave, which saw record-breaking temperatures. In total, 19 people lost their lives in open water, including 13 children. Experts have warned of the dangers of swimming in rivers, lakes, and the sea, even for strong swimmers.

A statement from the Royal Life Saving Society said: '90 per cent of accidental drownings in the last five years have taken place in open water. We urge the public to be aware of the risks and to never swim alone.'

The local community has expressed its shock and sadness, with floral tributes being laid at the beach. A fundraising page has been set up to support the boy's family.
