Gardaí have identified the teenager who died after being struck by a vehicle during a collision at the Donegal International Rally on Saturday as Tadhg Callaghan Carter, 15. He was fatally injured when a car left the road and ploughed into spectators at a left-hand bend on special stage 12 in Gartan. Two other onlookers were also hurt but their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Incident Details and Emergency Response
Emergency services were notified of an incident involving a participating car at location 15 on stage 12. Tadhg was transported by ambulance to Letterkenny University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other two spectators are receiving medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Event Cancellation and Official Statements
Motorsport Ireland and Donegal Motor Club expressed they were "deeply saddened" by the tragedy and cancelled the remainder of the three-day event as a mark of respect. In a statement, they confirmed a full investigation into the circumstances of the accident has been launched alongside Gardaí.
School Pays Tribute
Tadhg's school, Saint Euan's College, paid tribute on Sunday, stating: "It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that our school community learns of the sudden and tragic passing of our student, Tadhg Callaghan-Carter. Tadhg had just completed his Junior Cert examinations and was preparing to enter Fifth Year this coming September. He was a deeply valued and popular member of our school community, and his loss will be felt deeply by his classmates, friends, teachers, and everyone who knew him." The school announced it would open at 11am on Monday to offer support to pupils, parents, staff, and local community members.
Investigation and Appeal for Footage
Motorsport Ireland, as the country's governing body for four-wheeled motorsport, has launched a full investigation alongside Gardaí. Both authorities are aware that video footage of the incident is being shared on social media and have urged the public to refrain from distributing it.
