Metropolitan Police Launch Investigation After Security Breach Involving Mayor's Protection Team
The Metropolitan Police have initiated a formal inquiry following a significant security lapse, where a bag containing firearms and a Taser, issued to officers assigned to protect London Mayor Sadiq Khan, was discovered on a street in south London. This incident has raised serious concerns about operational protocols and public safety.
Discovery and Immediate Response
At approximately 9:40 PM on Tuesday, March 31, a member of the public stumbled upon a heavy bag left unattended on a kerbside in south London. The individual, identified as Jordan Griffiths, a scaffolder, reported the find to the police after his pregnant partner initially noticed the suspicious item. Within seven minutes of the call, officers arrived at the scene and safely recovered the contents, which included an MP5 semi-automatic Heckler & Koch carbine, a Glock pistol, a Taser, and ammunition, as reported by the Sun.
Griffiths recounted the alarming moment, stating, "My partner saw the bag sitting in the road by the kerbside and became suspicious. She went over to it and kicked it to see what it might be. But it was really heavy and didn't move. It was lucky one of the guns inside didn't go off or else she and our baby, due next month, could have been shot and killed." He added that upon bringing the bag inside, he was shocked to find the weapons, emphasizing the potential danger posed by the oversight.
Police Action and Ongoing Review
In response to the incident, the Metropolitan Police have removed five officers from frontline duties pending the outcome of the investigation. A spokesperson for the force confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Met's directorate of professional standards, underscoring the urgency of the review. The spokesperson stated, "We are urgently reviewing the circumstances of this incident and recognise the concern it may cause. At this stage, it is believed the bag was misplaced by on-duty officers a short time before the member of the public located it."
A spokesperson for Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed grave concern, noting, "This is a very serious incident, which has been referred to the Met's directorate of professional standards. The Met must now take all steps to ensure an incident like this never occurs again." Khan, who has served as London's mayor since 2016 after defeating Zac Goldsmith, is under 24-hour police protection due to his high-profile role, making this breach particularly alarming.
Broader Implications and Public Safety
This event highlights critical issues in the security measures surrounding public figures and the handling of firearms by law enforcement. The Metropolitan Police are now tasked with not only investigating the specific circumstances but also implementing stricter protocols to prevent future occurrences. The incident has sparked discussions about accountability and the need for enhanced training for protection officers.
As the inquiry progresses, authorities are expected to provide updates on any disciplinary actions or policy changes resulting from this oversight. The public and political stakeholders will be closely monitoring the situation to ensure that such lapses do not compromise safety in the future.
