For Seven News reporter Cassie Zervos, delivering national crime exclusives is a routine part of her profession. Yet, this week, she demonstrated extraordinary dedication by breaking the story that notorious cop-killer fugitive Dezi Freeman had been shot dead, all while officially on maternity leave.
Covering the Story Amid Personal Milestones
The network first reported the news on Monday, with Cassie, aged 34, being the first journalist at the scene. Remarkably, she accomplished this feat during her maternity leave, temporarily handing over her baby to her mother to travel to the remote location and complete coverage she had initiated months earlier.
Colleagues Laud Her Tenacity and Humility
Sunrise host Natalie Barr used her Instagram Story on Wednesday to commend Cassie's efforts. Sharing a photo of Cassie at the scene, Natalie wrote: 'Australia heard the Dezi Freeman news from this reporter @cassiezervos who broke the story, while on maternity leave, handing her baby to her mum for the day while she headed to the bush to finish what she started months ago.'
Natalie reshared a post by fellow Seven News reporter Laura Turner, who also praised Cassie for her determination. Laura wrote: 'Hats off to Crime reporter Queen @cassiezervos. Yesterday she broke the nation-wide exclusive that cop killer Dezi Freeman had been shot dead. She did it while on maternity leave, handing her baby to her mum and hotfooting it to the bush to lead @7newsmelbourne @7newsaustralia coverage. She is incredible, tenacious and what's more, humble. Her grit and dedication to our craft is an inspiration.'
The post garnered numerous supportive comments, including one from Cassie herself, who responded modestly: 'Oh beautiful girl – I'm blushing! Thank you xx.' Another commenter expressed awe, noting: 'I was thinking – hasn't she just had a baby?!?!? What a woman!'
Details of the Fugitive's Demise
Dezi Freeman, aged 56, was killed by police after being discovered in a shipping container near Walwa, close to the New South Wales-Victoria border, at 8:30 AM on Monday. He had been evading capture for seven months following an incident where he shot dead two officers and injured a third while they were executing a warrant at his property in Porepunkah, Victoria.
The manhunt for Freeman escalated into one of Australia's largest police operations, involving extensive searches of bushland and a reward of $1 million offered for information leading to his capture.
Personal Life and Recent Challenges
Cassie welcomed her first child, Lucy, with her husband Paul Tatnell in November of the previous year. The couple, who met while working at the Herald Sun, married in Melbourne in 2021.
This professional triumph follows a period where Cassie faced online criticism over her appearance while covering a court case. She addressed the trolling on TikTok, advocating for kindness and emphasizing that focusing on physical attributes is unacceptable, stating: 'I believe we can be better and as human beings we can be kinder to one another. It's 2025, we shouldn't be commenting or focusing on how people look, it's just not OK, it can make people feel really sad. I'm human with feelings and I was left feeling pretty crappy about it.'
