Reality television star Gemma Collins orchestrated an elaborate April Fools' Day deception on Wednesday, sharing a series of artificial intelligence-generated wedding photographs across her Instagram platform. The former The Only Way Is Essex personality, aged 45, initially tricked numerous followers by posting an image of herself adorned in a bridal gown, accompanied by a caption claiming she had entered into a clandestine marriage.
The Prank Unfolds Across Social Media
Collins' initial post featured a beaming snapshot where she tagged her fiancé, businessman Rami Hawash, 50. She wrote, 'Hey guys I got married in secret recently I didn't marry as the GC i married as the girl @rami_hawash_ knows pre fame.' The caption elaborated, describing it as 'the most beautiful day with the most beautiful people in a room filled with love.' She claimed that due to circulating stories, she felt compelled to share the news prematurely.
Many social media users were momentarily convinced by the convincing imagery and heartfelt message. Comedian Seann Walsh contributed to the illusion by commenting, 'It was my pleasure to walk you down the aisle.' However, astute followers quickly discerned the prank, recognising the date and the increasingly fantastical nature of subsequent posts.
Celebrity Cameos and Playful Banter
Not content with a single post, Collins escalated the jest by sharing another AI-crafted photograph. This image depicted her in a white dress alongside pop icon Britney Spears and her close friends, the musical duo Jedward. She humorously captioned it, 'Best bridesmaids EVER.'
Jedward, comprising John and Edward Grimes, enthusiastically played along in the comments section. They responded, 'When Britney sang as you walked down the aisle it was breathtaking! We're gonna cherish these moments forever.' John Grimes added a separate comment, jesting, 'It was such a beautiful day loved being your flower boys and when Victoria Beckham gave us all a Jepic dance.'
Background of Collins' Relationship with Rami Hawash
The prank draws upon the very real engagement between Gemma Collins and Rami Hawash. The couple first began dating in 2011, experiencing an on-off romance for three years. This period included a Christmas proposal from Hawash in 2012. They ultimately parted ways in 2014.
Following her split from TOWIE co-star James 'Arg' Argent, Collins rekindled her relationship with the businessman in 2020. In 2024, Hawash proposed once more, and the pair are now genuinely planning to marry later this year. Collins has expressed her desire for multiple wedding celebrations, including a main UK ceremony, a second event abroad, and a formal gathering for close family and friends. Characteristically, she also plans to wear several different wedding dresses.
Personal Challenges and Future Plans
Beyond the lighthearted prank, Collins has recently been open about significant personal struggles. Last week, she revealed that her relationship with Hawash 'took a hit' during her emotionally taxing IVF journey, which left her feeling 'broken.' Speaking about her new Sky series, Four Weddings And A Baby, she told presenter Dermot O'Leary, 'My whole world just fell apart... there was no performative person there.'
Collins is already a stepmother to Hawash's seven-year-old son, Tristan. She has faced considerable challenges in her efforts to conceive, suffering from a low AMH hormone count and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Tragically, she has endured three miscarriages—in 2012, 2020 during the Covid pandemic, and again in July 2020 while pregnant with her ex-boyfriend James Argent's child.
She has publicly discussed considering surrogacy and fostering options, inspired by her own mother's experience as a fostered child. Despite these hardships, Collins continues to plan her upcoming wedding with Hawash, blending her trademark humour with candid revelations about her personal life.
