Rabid Beaver Attacks Boy at New Jersey Lake, Multiple Injured
Rabid Beaver Attacks Boy at NJ Lake

A young boy sustained serious injuries after a rabid beaver attacked him and several other individuals at a lake in New Jersey. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Sunday at Continental Soldiers Park in Mahwah, according to Captain Michael Blondin of the Mahwah Police Department.

Attack Details

The child was fishing when the beaver charged at him from the water. The boy attempted to flee but tripped, allowing the animal to repeatedly bite his upper thigh. A family friend managed to drive the beaver away with several kicks and strikes, though the animal lingered nearby until first responders arrived.

The boy was transported to a local hospital, where he received medical attention and is awaiting test results. The beaver was removed from the park and subsequently tested positive for rabies, as confirmed by a statement from the town on Tuesday.

Public Health Response

Officials have stated that individuals who interacted with the animal are also receiving treatment. The township has urged anyone else who may have had contact with the sick creature to immediately notify the Mahwah Township Health Department.

Rabies is an extremely deadly virus transmitted through the saliva of infected animals to humans. While it can be treated if caught early, once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal, according to Rabies Watch.

Additional Incidents

Authorities are aware of a video circulating online showing the same beaver acting erratically at the park on Sunday. The footage, reviewed by the Daily Mail, depicts a family on the edge of the lake being viciously attacked by the beaver. The animal showed no fear, charging a group of four before being grabbed and tossed into the water. Captain Blondin confirmed that the family from the video has been identified and is also being treated.

Beaver Behavior

Beavers are common in New Jersey and are not typically considered dangerous. However, they will defend themselves or their territory if threatened. Beavers can measure 3 to 4 feet in length and weigh between 30 and 70 pounds, as noted by Critter Control.
