West Midlands Police have launched a public appeal for a crucial missing item as they continue to investigate the tragic death of a man discovered on school premises in Wolverhampton. The body of Neil Thompson, a 45-year-old also known as Chuck, was found in the grounds of Smestow Academy on Windmill Crescent during the early hours of January 19.
Urgent Search for Electric Bicycle
Officers are now urgently seeking an e-bike that Mr Thompson was seen riding in the hours before his death. The specific model is a Carrera Crossfire E Men's Electric Hybrid Bike 2.0 with an L Frame. Police believe he had been riding this bicycle from the Aldersley area along the Smestow Canal path on the outskirts of the city prior to the incident.
Discovery by School Pupil
The discovery was made by an 11-year-old schoolgirl who was on her way to a physical education lesson. She found Mr Thompson's body on the school premises, with police later pronouncing him dead at the scene. He had been spotted earlier that same day at 1am on Wheatsheaf Road, wearing distinctive clothing including a camouflage jacket, grey gilet, jeans, a beanie hat, and carrying a red rucksack, possibly with sunglasses.
Police Investigation Continues
Detective Inspector Joe Davenport stated: "We are continuing to treat Mr Thompson's death as unexplained, but extensive investigations are continuing as we work to find the answers his family deserve." He added that while current information points toward an accident, locating the missing e-bike is essential to further establish the circumstances.
Extensive searches of the surrounding area and significant CCTV analysis have so far failed to locate the bicycle. Detective Inspector Davenport emphasised: "We're appealing for anyone who has found a bike to contact us. We would ask anyone who has any information about it to come forward and help us bring this investigation to a conclusion and bring some answers for Mr Thompson's family."
Family Tribute to 'Beautiful' Man
Mr Thompson's family have paid heartfelt tribute to him, describing him as a "beautiful son, brother, father and friend Chuck, very much loved in the community of fishing, his one true love." They added: "His love for life and funny stories touched the lives of so many people."
West Midlands Police are asking anyone with information to call 101 or contact them via Live Chat, quoting log number 1452 of January 19. The investigation remains active as officers work to piece together the final movements of Mr Thompson and determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
