Rapper Released Amid Ongoing Murder Investigation
Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Wee Meng Chee, widely known by his stage name Namewee, has been released on police bail after spending a week in custody assisting with the investigation into the murder of Taiwanese social media influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin. The 42-year-old artist was granted bail on Thursday, 13th November 2025, but must report back to authorities on 26th November, according to his lawyer Joshua Tay.
Details of the Case
Police records indicate that Namewee was the last person seen with Hsieh Yu-hsin before the 31-year-old influencer was discovered dead in a Kuala Lumpur hotel bathtub on 22nd October. The case was reclassified as murder last week, significantly escalating the investigation's severity. Hsieh, who had accumulated half a million Instagram followers and maintained an OnlyFans account, had arrived in Malaysia on 20th October for a scheduled four-day visit.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus confirmed in an official statement that authorities are currently awaiting the autopsy report to determine Hsieh's exact cause of death. Once completed, the investigation findings will be submitted to the attorney-general's chambers for further action. Fadil previously told local media that Namewee and Hsieh shared what he described as a "special relationship" that extended "beyond close friendship," though he provided no additional details.
Legal Complexities and Background
The case has taken multiple legal turns, with Namewee having previously faced separate charges for drug possession and use, allegations he has consistently denied. Interestingly, Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar has stated that current evidence doesn't directly link the rapper to Hsieh's death.
Namewee voluntarily surrendered to authorities last Wednesday and has expressed profound sadness over Hsieh's death while maintaining his innocence. In an Instagram post last week, he committed to full cooperation with investigators, stating he wanted to provide answers to both the public and Hsieh's family.
The two had professional connections dating back to 2020, when Hsieh, a former nurse known affectionately as "Nurse Goddess" by her followers, appeared in one of Namewee's music videos. Namewee himself is no stranger to controversy, having first gained national attention in 2007 with a provocative parody of Malaysia's national anthem. His career has been marked by outspoken lyrics and films that frequently challenge political and cultural taboos, earning both acclaim and repeated clashes with authorities throughout his career.
