Major House Fire in Morden Sends Three to Hospital as 70 Firefighters Battle Blaze
A child and two adults have been rushed to hospital after a fierce fire engulfed a two-storey home in Morden, south-west London. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning, prompting a massive emergency response.
Intense Emergency Response
Around 70 firefighters and ten fire engines were dispatched to the scene on Halesowen Road shortly after 4am. The London Fire Brigade received 17 calls from concerned local residents, highlighting the severity and visibility of the blaze.
Crews from multiple stations including Sutton, Mitcham, Wimbledon, New Malden, Wallington, Tooting and Norbury were mobilised to tackle the inferno. The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service also attended the incident, working alongside fire crews.
Extensive Property Damage
The fire completely destroyed the ground floor, first floor and roof of the two-storey end-of-terrace property. Photographs from the scene show the building in ruins with smoke billowing from a large hole in the collapsed roof structure.
Firefighters employed sophisticated techniques to control the blaze, including using a 32-metre turntable ladder as a water tower to attack the flames from above. Crews also had to cool a 15kg gas cylinder to ambient temperature to prevent potential explosion before safely removing it from the premises.
Hospital Treatment Required
Three individuals – one woman, one man and a boy – suffered smoke inhalation and required immediate medical attention. London Ambulance Service paramedics treated them at the scene before transporting all three to hospital for further care and monitoring.
The firefighting operation lasted more than two hours before crews managed to bring the blaze under control. Despite the extensive damage and injuries, there were no reported fatalities from the incident.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage, with authorities launching a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the blaze. Fire safety experts will examine the property remains to determine what sparked the destructive fire that required such significant emergency resources.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in residential properties, particularly during the colder months when heating systems see increased use.
