A man has been fatally shot by police in the New South Wales town of Gunnedah after he aimed a bow and arrow at officers who were conducting a welfare check.

Welfare Call Turns Deadly

Police were called to an address on Quia Road in Gunnedah at approximately 1.40pm on Friday, 16 January 2026. The officers, attached to the Oxley Police District, had responded to reports expressing concern for a person's welfare at the property, located roughly 450 kilometres north-west of Sydney.

Initial contact was made with the man outside the home. However, the situation escalated when he retreated inside and then re-emerged armed with a bow and arrow.

Officers Forced to Open Fire

A spokesperson for NSW Police stated that the man then aimed the weapon at the attending officers. The police returned to their vehicle to seek cover, but a firearm was discharged when the man continued to pose a direct threat.

Paramedics from NSW Ambulance treated the man at the scene for a gunshot wound, but he could not be saved and was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been formally released to the public.
