A man has died after being shot by police in the New South Wales town of Gunnedah, following a confrontation where he allegedly aimed a bow and arrow at officers.
Welfare Check Turns Fatal
Officers were called to a property on Quia Road in Gunnedah, approximately 450 kilometres north-west of Sydney, at around 1.40pm on Friday. The purpose of the visit was to conduct a welfare check on the occupant.
Initial discussions took place between the police and the man outside the home. However, the situation escalated when the man retreated inside the property and then re-emerged armed with a bow and arrow.
Police Discharge Firearm
In response to the immediate threat, the officers moved back to their vehicle to seek cover. A police firearm was discharged when the man aimed the bow and arrow at them, according to an official statement released by the force.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene for a gunshot wound, but he could not be saved and was pronounced dead.
Critical Incident Investigation Launched
The NSW Police Force has initiated a critical incident investigation to examine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting. This is standard procedure following such incidents.
To ensure transparency and independent scrutiny, the investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command. Furthermore, the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) will provide oversight of the entire process.
The community of Gunnedah, a rural town in the state's north-west, is now awaiting the findings of these inquiries as details of the tragic event continue to emerge.
