A large-scale search and rescue operation enters its fourth day on Victoria's Mount Buffalo, as emergency services and volunteers battle against time and terrain to find missing bushwalker Dezi Freeman.
The 33-year-old Melbourne man was last seen on Sunday afternoon near the Cathedral and The Gorge walking tracks. He was reported missing after failing to return to his accommodation, sparking an immediate and extensive response from Victoria Police and the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association's air wing.
The Search Intensifies
Inspector Lisa McDougall confirmed that the search has been relentless, with teams working around the clock. "We've had ground crews, air support, and specialist search teams combing the area," she stated. "The conditions are challenging, with steep cliffs, dense bushland, and rapidly changing weather."
Overnight temperatures have plunged towards freezing, adding a critical urgency to the mission. Search managers are deeply concerned for Mr. Freeman's welfare, given he was not equipped for an overnight stay in such harsh conditions.
A Community Rallies
The local community and Mr. Freeman's family have made heartfelt public appeals for any information. His family described him as an experienced and capable hiker, making his disappearance all the more puzzling and worrying.
Police are urging anyone who was in the Mount Buffalo National Park area on Sunday, particularly around The Gorge lookout, to come forward if they have any information, no matter how small. They are also reviewing CCTV from local businesses and accommodation providers.
