Typhoon Jangmi, also known as Typhoon No 6, has moved northwards across Japan this week, bringing heavy rain and strong winds that left 23 people injured. The storm, which reached category 1 status with sustained winds of 80mph (130kph), caused significant disruption from Okinawa to mainland Japan.
Authorities advised more than 1.52 million people to evacuate their homes as the typhoon triggered landslide warnings and river flooding. In Tokyo's Chiyoda ward, three-hourly rainfall reached 105mm on Wednesday, a record for August. The storm damaged 57 homes and left 60,000 households without electricity.
Among the injured, 17 were in Okinawa. The typhoon also damaged the exterior wall of Himeji Castle, a Unesco world heritage site in western Japan, where the maximum wind speed recorded was 56mph. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the typhoon has since weakened into a tropical depression and moved eastwards away from the islands.
