Nottinghamshire Police have increased patrols around Winter Wonderland following an incident on Sunday evening (November 16) where a group of youths brandished machetes near the Council House in Old Market Square. The confrontation occurred in full view of families enjoying the Christmas market.
Police reported that the group fled before officers arrived, and no injuries were sustained. In a statement on Thursday (November 20), Assistant Chief Constable Suk Verma announced stepped-up uniformed patrols to provide reassurance and maintain a safe atmosphere.
“Whether you're out and about enjoying Nottingham’s Winter Wonderland, shopping, or working, we want the city centre to be a safe and welcoming place for you,” Verma said. He noted that patrolling the market is an annual practice, and the increased presence is part of a broader strategy to tackle knife crime through community engagement and partnership work.
Two arrests have been made: a 14-year-old boy on Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of violent disorder, possession of a knife blade or pointed article, and possession of an offensive weapon; and a 23-year-old man on Wednesday night on suspicion of violent disorder. Both remain in custody, and inquiries to trace further suspects are ongoing.
