Jesse Derry has provided Chelsea supporters with a reassuring update after being taken to hospital following a severe head collision during the match against Nottingham Forest. The 18-year-old made his Premier League debut under interim manager Callum McFarlane in the 3-1 home defeat, but his afternoon ended abruptly just before half-time.
Incident on the Pitch
While contesting an aerial ball with Forest defender Zach Abbott, Derry was knocked unconscious, prompting a nine-minute delay as medical staff attended to him. He was subsequently stretchered off and taken to St Mary's Hospital in distressing scenes. The son of former Premier League midfielder Shaun Derry, Jesse has now indicated that he is on the road to recovery.
Derry's Statement
On X, he wrote: 'A dream come true to start at Stamford Bridge for my Premier League debut. I’d like to thank all the Chelsea medical staff, everyone at St Mary’s Hospital, my teammates, and all the fans for their great support. I can’t wait to be back playing in front of everyone very soon.' He accompanied the message with four pictures from the game, where he had performed admirably before the injury.
Penalty and Aftermath
Chelsea were awarded a penalty for the challenge on Derry, but Cole Palmer's spot kick was saved by Matz Sels. Given the severity of the injury and the fact he received oxygen on the pitch, Derry's teammates, friends, and family are immensely relieved that there appears to be no lasting damage.
Other Head Injuries
Derry was not the only player to suffer a head injury during the game. Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White lasted just 20 minutes after coming on as a substitute. He sustained a bloody head after colliding with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez while challenging for an aerial ball. Both players immediately fell to the ground and required urgent medical treatment for head wounds. After five minutes of care, they left the field with bandaged heads, replaced by Chris Wood and Filip Jorgensen respectively.
After the match, Gibbs-White shared a picture on Instagram showing his injury, which required numerous stitches from his nose to above his left eyebrow, along with a swollen nose and a steroplast in his nostril. He captioned it: 'Thanks for the messages. What a win, congrats T [Taiwo Awoniyi].' Shortly after, Sanchez also posted on Instagram, showing stitches on his forehead and writing: 'Seen that you came out worst [sic] than me, hope you are OK big man @morgangibbswhite.'
