Glasgow Taxi Driver Sentenced to Seven Years for Rape in 'Despicable Betrayal of Trust'
A Glasgow taxi driver who raped a woman after picking her up from a night out has been jailed for seven years in what prosecutors described as a "despicable betrayal of trust." Thomas Tosh, 39, attacked the victim at his home in Drumchapel while she was intoxicated and incapable of consenting.
Details of the Attack and Investigation
The incident occurred in the early hours of September 30, 2023, after Tosh picked up the victim and her friends from a pub in Clydebank. He dropped off all other passengers except for the 23-year-old woman, then turned off the taxi's GPS tracking system and drove in the opposite direction from her intended destination, taking her to his home instead.
Prosecutors used DNA evidence, text messages, and witness accounts to secure the conviction. Tosh was identified after the victim's friend found a picture of him on social media and showed it to her, aiding the investigation.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
On Tuesday, Judge Hughes sentenced Tosh to seven years in jail at the High Court in Glasgow. His name has been added to the sex offenders register indefinitely. Faye Cook, procurator fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, commented on the case, stating:
"This was a despicable betrayal of trust by a man who was responsible for getting a woman home safely after a night out. Thomas Tosh deliberately concealed his location as he drove the victim to his home, where he raped her while it was clear she was unable to consent."
Recognition of Victim's Courage
Cook also praised the victim's bravery throughout the prosecution process, saying, "I want to recognise the courage shown by this young woman throughout the prosecution process. Her strength has helped bring a predatory offender to justice." She emphasized that Scotland's prosecutors will continue to use all available tools to pursue those who abuse women and girls and protect the public from harm.
This case highlights the severe consequences of such crimes and the importance of thorough investigations in securing convictions. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the legal system's commitment to holding offenders accountable and supporting victims through the judicial process.
