The rugby league community is rallying around former Newcastle Knights premiership winner Owen Craigie after he revealed he suffered a stroke while sleeping. Craigie, 48, has been in hospital for two weeks following the terrifying medical episode.
Craigie's Account of the Stroke
Speaking to The Newcastle Herald, Craigie described the frightening experience: 'It's scary to think what could have happened. They (medical professionals) said I'm lucky to be alive. I just fell asleep on the lounge and when I woke up, the whole right side of my body was paralysed. My memory was shot and I was totally disoriented. They rushed me to the John Hunter Hospital where they found a bleed on the left side of my brain.'
Outpouring of Support
Fans have taken to social media to express their support. One wrote: 'Very skilful player, wish him a speedy recovery.' Another added: 'All the best to you Owen.' A third posted: 'Best wishes for a speedy recovery mate.'
Craigie's Rugby League Career
Craigie played 153 first-grade matches and was part of the Knights' 1997 ARL premiership-winning team. He made his debut at just 16 years old, becoming the youngest player ever to play for the club. NRL Immortal Andrew Johns once called him the 'most naturally talented player' he ever played with.
Personal Battles and Foundation
In 2022, Craigie revealed he had gambled $2 million on poker machines and horses following a marriage breakdown and mental health struggles. The father of three now runs the Big OC Foundation, which helps people battling addiction and suicidal thoughts.
