Five Arrested in South Tyneside for Burglary, Drug Offences

Five individuals have been taken into custody in South Tyneside in connection with offences including burglary, drug possession, and vehicle crime. Over the past week, law enforcement officers carried out 11 stop-searches, issued two dispersal notices, and made five arrests.

Arrests and Charges

Two suspects believed to be responsible for 14 alleged shop theft offences were also arrested and subsequently charged. On Wednesday, June 3, police executed a warrant on Calf Close Lane in Jarrow as part of an investigation into suspected drug supply. During the search, officers discovered approximately £1,300 in suspected criminal cash and around £600 worth of a substance believed to be cocaine.

Community Engagement

South Tyneside's volunteer cadets were active in the Biddick Hall and Whiteleas areas, distributing leaflets focused on motorcycle disorder and advising the public on how they can assist the police. This initiative is part of broader efforts to address community concerns.

Collaborative Operations

The recent activity builds on ongoing collaboration with the North East Regional Crime Unit (NEROCU), Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), and the Neighbourhood Support Team (NST). These teams recently seized a large quantity of illegal vapes, cannabis, and an electric bike during a raid on a premises in the Wardley area, which was suspected of supplying illicit products to young people.

Juvenile Arrest

A 17-year-old male was arrested in connection with that raid and has since been released on bail while inquiries continue.

Police Statement

Chief Inspector Phil Baker of Northumbria Police commented: "While executing warrants and making arrests is a key aspect of policing, there is also a strong community-focused element. The good news is that our local neighbourhood teams can handle both, as demonstrated by these results. We are here and we are listening to how we can solve problems to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour over time, ensuring South Tyneside remains a safe and enjoyable place to live, work, and visit."

Chief Insp Baker added: "We are committed to regularly working with partners such as South Tyneside Council and our regional teams at NEROCU to achieve the best outcomes. Rest assured, we will continue to maintain a visible presence in our communities and be there when the public needs us most, delivering on our priorities to keep communities free from crime and anti-social behaviour. If you have concerns about your area, please remember we are here to listen, take note, and take necessary action."
