Driver jailed for mowing down schoolboy in hit-and-run

A reckless motorist who fled the scene after mowing down a 12-year-old schoolboy in a devastating hit-and-run has been handed a prison sentence at Southwark Crown Court.

Mohammed Sullaiman Khan, 45, showed utter cowardice when he abandoned the young victim with life-changing injuries on the pavement in Westminster, central London, before attempting to evade justice.

The horrific incident occurred on 23 November 2022, when Khan, behind the wheel of his Audi A5, struck the child at speed. Instead of stopping to help, he callously drove away, leaving the boy fighting for his life.

A Trail of Evidence and a Family's Agony

Metropolitan Police detectives launched an intensive investigation, piecing together CCTV footage that captured Khan's desperate attempts to cover his tracks. The footage revealed him driving to a secluded car park where he assessed the damage to his vehicle before disappearing.

The young victim's family endured unimaginable anguish. In a powerful statement, the boy's mother condemned Khan's actions: "You left my son for dead on the side of the road like he was nothing... The mental scars are sometimes harder to deal with than the physical ones." She described the long and painful journey of surgeries and rehabilitation her son has had to face.

Justice Served at Southwark Crown Court

Khan, of no fixed address, was finally brought to justice. He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a road accident.

This week, he was sentenced to two years and eight months imprisonment. He was also banned from driving for three years and four months, a period that will commence upon his release from prison.

Investigating officer PC Sam Jephcote of the Met's Roads and Transport Policing Command emphasised the severity of the crime: "This case starkly highlights the catastrophic consequences of dangerous driving... Khan's choice to flee compounded the suffering of a young boy and his family, who have shown incredible bravery throughout this ordeal."
