Doctor Exploited Position to Secretly Film and Abuse Male Patients
A sexual health doctor who developed what was described as a 'special interest in penises' has been sentenced to six years imprisonment for secretly filming and sexually abusing male patients during medical examinations.
Systematic Abuse Under Medical Guise
Dr Timothy Girling, aged 55, was a practising sexual health doctor at a medical centre in Bournemouth, Dorset, where he systematically preyed on male patients by groping them and making covert recordings during intimate examinations. The court heard how the 'deeply calculated' medic exploited his professional position to 'manipulate vulnerable individuals' and carried out a series of sexual offences 'under the guise of legitimate medical practice'.
Prosecutors detailed how Girling would sexually assault patients and perform sex acts while pretending to examine them for complaints such as rashes or other health issues. His intimate physical examinations went 'far beyond what was clinically required', according to court testimony.
Discovery and Investigation
The doctor's crimes came to light when one male patient heard an iPhone begin recording during an examination and noticed the device partially concealed in Girling's pocket. The victim took the doctor's phone, prompting Girling to flee the building. When police interviewed this patient, he also reported inappropriate touching during a previous appointment.
Dorset Police launched an investigation in August 2023, identifying two additional patients who had been sexually assaulted, with one also having been recorded without consent. Examination of the doctor's electronic devices uncovered further recordings, approximately 600 images of penises or 'tight clothing', and indecent images of children. Investigators also discovered Girling had set up a camera to film other men using a bathroom.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
A jury at Bournemouth Crown Court found Girling guilty of three counts of sexual assault, six charges of voyeurism, and one count of attempted voyeurism. He separately pleaded guilty to three charges of making indecent images of children.
During the trial, the court heard that Girling had been diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder, which reportedly led to him developing a 'special area of interest' in penises. However, sentencing judge Jonathan Fuller KC dismissed this diagnosis as the cause of his offending, stating: 'Your interest was a sexual one and that sexual activity was of your own choosing.'
Judge Fuller noted that Girling had continued offending despite having been suspended and reinstated following an earlier complaint. The judge also referenced 'weird' behaviour where Girling photographed men urinating in alleyways, though these incidents did not form part of the formal charges.
'Being a doctor is a significant thing in a person's life and no doubt there must be many you have helped but on another darker side, there are those you have abused,' Judge Fuller told the defendant. 'The reality is you used your position to satisfy your particular sexual interests. This was a gross betrayal of your patients' trust.'
Victim Impact and Official Responses
One victim told police: 'I left there crying because it was very wrong and he just abused his power.' He added: 'I was a very, very vulnerable person back then, I was in a really dark place.'
Prosecutor Rebecca Austin told the court Girling was 'using the guise of medical necessity to gain sexual gratification'. She added: 'Patients went to the clinic with the expectation that they might need to be touched for their medical condition to be diagnosed and treated.'
Detective Constable Kit Little of Dorset Police stated: 'Timothy Girling was in a position of trust as a sexual health doctor and exploited this by inappropriately touching and making recordings of his victims. We have worked tirelessly since the initial report was first made in August 2023 to investigate Girling's offending, identify further victims where possible and bring him to justice.'
Lucy Paddick of the Crown Prosecution Service commented: 'A doctor's duty is to care for patients, not exploit them, and Timothy Girling repeatedly violated that fundamental trust. These sexual offences, carried out under the guise of legitimate medical practice, were deeply calculated. He manipulated vulnerable individuals and exploited them in clinical settings - a place where they should feel safe and secure.'
