A man suspected of opening fire on the Phoenix office of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk has been shot dead by police following a tense armed standoff at a local hotel.
The dramatic incident unfolded on Tuesday, July 16th, after an individual allegedly targeted the headquarters of Kirk's organisation, Turning Point USA. No injuries were reported from the initial shooting at the office building.
Police later tracked the suspect to a nearby hotel. According to official statements, the situation escalated rapidly when the suspect, who was armed, confronted officers. "The suspect was given numerous commands to show his hands and get on the ground. The suspect did not comply and a confrontation occurred between the suspect and officers," a police spokesperson stated.
This confrontation resulted in officers discharging their weapons, fatally wounding the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene. In line with standard procedure, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending a full investigation.
Charlie Kirk, the founder and president of Turning Point USA, addressed the incident, stating, "I am grateful to the Phoenix Police Department for their swift and decisive action to track down and eliminate the threat... Violence has no place in our society and must always be condemned."
The motive behind the initial shooting at the office remains unclear as investigations continue. The identity of the deceased suspect has not yet been released by authorities.
