Brooklyn Mother's Horror as Stray Bullet Kills Baby in Bodega Shooting

Chilling surveillance footage has captured the devastating moment a young mother in New York City realised her seven-month-old baby daughter had been killed by a stray bullet. The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday inside a bodega in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where Lianna Charles-Moore was seen entering the store with her infant Kaori secured in a stroller.

Panic and Terror Inside the Store

Several stray bullets fired outside the establishment crashed through the windows, causing Charles-Moore, her partner, Kaori, and their two-year-old son to cower in fear. The family initially mistook the gunshots for fireworks, but police later confirmed the shots were fired by two men riding a moped who recklessly sprayed bullets along the street.

When the gunfire ceased and the young family stood up, the footage reveals the heart-wrenching instant Charles-Moore discovered Kaori had been shot in the head. She pulled back the stroller's visor to find her daughter with a fatal head wound, prompting her to leap into the air screaming in terror.

The distraught mother then jumped up and down repeatedly, placing her hands on her head as she agonised over the sight of her mortally wounded baby. Charles-Moore told the New York Post she was hugging her son moments before turning to her daughter.

'When I looked to my left, my daughter was just there, lying there. She was shot in the head. She was just bleeding. It was just too much,' she recalled.

Chaotic Aftermath and Community Response

The mother's screams alerted others in the bodega, who rushed to her aid and witnessed the infant lying motionless in the stroller. A young child standing behind the family peered around the stroller before immediately retreating upon seeing Kaori. Another man ran over to assist Charles-Moore, then covered his mouth in shock and moved the stroller upon realising the severity of the situation.

Kaori was rushed to a nearby hospital but was tragically pronounced dead just twenty minutes after the shooting. Authorities confirmed that her two-year-old brother was also grazed by a bullet and transported to hospital for treatment.

Police Investigation and Suspect Details

Following the shooting that stunned the Brooklyn neighbourhood, police released surveillance images of two men riding a moped who allegedly fired the deadly bullets. One suspect fired recklessly on the street while the other operated the vehicle.

Investigators reported that the two men crashed their moped into an oncoming car just two blocks from the scene. One suspect was thrown so violently that his shoes flew off, sustaining injuries that required hospital treatment. This led investigators to identify him as a person of interest in the shooting.

While this suspect's name has not been disclosed, police have launched a city-wide manhunt for the second unidentified individual. Sources indicated that authorities remain uncertain why the moped-riding assailants opened fire, but they do not believe Kaori or her family were the intended targets.

Family's Grief and Call for Justice

Charles-Moore expressed profound devastation over her daughter's senseless death, revealing that Kaori had only recently learned to say 'mama' and was just beginning to crawl. The grieving mother described her daughter as 'loving, caring, always smiling.'

'My daughter was innocent. She didn’t deserve that. We were just going outside to go get her a few things, and my son a few things,' she told the Post. 'My son got impacted with everything that happened, yeah, so it was just too much, because they could have killed my son and my daughter.'

Charles-Moore emphasised that her daughter's death is 'too much' and issued a direct plea for justice. 'I want justice,' she stated firmly, calling for police to track down and prosecute the gunmen responsible for this horrific act of violence.

The incident has left a child's blood-soaked hat lying on the ground near the scene and bullet casings scattered outside the bodega, stark reminders of the tragedy that has shaken the Brooklyn community to its core.
